Overview

This programme is designed to extend your knowledge of te reo to an advanced intermediate-level, including regional language variances. You'll develop a shared appreciation for and contribute to the development of te reo kia tika, kia rere and kia Māori.

Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to communicate in te reo with fluency and increasing flexibility in everyday whānau, marae, social/community, workplace and/or academic contexts; and in broader aspects of te ao Māori.

Course Hours

This programme is taught part-time over 38 weeks, including 2 holiday weeks.

Per week, your learning will include approximately:

Class Time

3 hrs

Manawatu – Tuesdays, 6pm – 9pm

Wairarapa - Wednesdays, 6pm - 9pm

Study Time

10 hrs

Self-directed learning in your own time

You will also complete four noho marae throughout the year.

Course Information

This programme comprises 60 credits.

Te Kukunetanga - Whakarāpopoto Me Te Whakaatu Pārongo Summarising and Presenting Information (15 Credits)

Ākonga will understand advanced intermediate-level te reo Māori vocabulary and grammatical structures to summarise and present familiar information.

Te Kukunetanga - Te Arotake Me Te Whakautu Huatau Evaluating and Responding to Ideas (15 Credits)

Ākonga will gain the ability to evaluate and respond to ideas as well as account for and sustain a point of view in advanced intermediate-level te reo Māori for familiar and some unfamiliar iwi contexts.

Te Kukunetanga - Reo Mō Ngā Whāinga Ā Ringa Te Reo Māori for Practical Purposes (15 Credits)

Ākonga will learn advanced intermediate level te reo Māori for practical purposes, on familiar and unfamiliar topics in workplace or academic contexts.

Te Kukunetanga - Te Kōtui Me Te Kukunetanga – Te Kōtui Me Te Arotake Tohenga Synthesising and Evaluating Arguments (15 Credits)

Ākonga will gain the ability to synthesise and evaluate in advanced intermediate-level te reo Māori in specified contexts and some unfamiliar settings.

Learning Facilities

All ākonga have access to the full range of the UCOL on-site facilities such as the library, Learning Hubs, study areas and computer labs.

Domestic Entry Requirements

Te Reo Rangatira at NCEA Level 2,

OR

Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Reo Rua) (Te Kaupae 3) or equivalent,

OR

Aromatawai ā-waha, kanohi ki te kanohi with programme lecturer and/or Programme Leader.

English language proficiency

If English is not your first language, you must also demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (academic) of 5.5 with no band score less than 5 (or equivalent including TOEFL). IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form (i.e. combining scores from more than one test is not permissible).

International Entry Requirements

In addition to the Domestic Entry Requirements, the following applies to international learner applicants.

English language proficiency

International learner applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5 (or equivalent including TOEFL). IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form (i.e. combining scores from more than one test is not permissible).

Under 20 years of age

In addition to this, international applicants under 20 years of age must have NCEA equivalency.

Accreditation

The programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020, and Universal College of Learning is accredited to teach it.

Advice And Guidance

This programme is intended for ākonga who have an intermediate level of understanding and ability in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga.

Recognition of prior learning

Applications for Recognition of Prior Learning, including Cross Credit, Credit Transfer and Assessment of Prior Learning may be made on the Recognition of Prior Learning Form where a learner believes all learning outcomes for a course have already been met. Applications will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the UCOL Academic Statute and other relavant policies and procedures.

Application checklist

It will make the process easier if you prepare the following before you apply:

  • National Student Number (NSN) (If you don't have a NSN, you may request one from NZQA, or you can supply a verified copy of your birth certificate, passport or Whakapapa statement.)

  • Evidence of your highest level of academic achievement (and evidence of prior learning, if applicable)

  • Evidence that you meet the entry requirements of the programme

  • Check if you're eligible for additional support or a scholarship. If you're 19 years or younger, you may be eligible to enrol in one of our free Youth Transition programmes.
