Overview

As no two days are the same working in hospitality, it is important to keep your skills relevant and up-to-date. This programme sets you on the path to success in this fast-paced industry, giving you the chance to earn NCEA Level 2 while learning the practical skills needed to thrive in cafés, restaurants, bars, or catering businesses.

You will learn about:

  • Food safety

  • Barista skills

  • Customer service

  • Commercial kitchens

  • Preparation and cooking

  • Baking

Fridays, 9am - 3pm in all locations.

Course Information

This programme comprises 21 credits.

Unit Standard 167 (Level 2) (Version 10) (4 Credits)

Practise food safety methods in a food business under supervision.

Unit Standard 13272 (Level 2) (Version 6) (2 Credits)

Cook food items by baking.

Unit Standard 14441 (Level 3) (Version 7) (5 Credits)

Provide cafe counter service in a hospitality establishment.

Unit Standard 17285 (Level 2) (Version 10) (4 Credits)

Demonstrate knowledge of commercial espresso coffee equipment and prepare espresso beverages under supervision.

Unit Standard 13281 (Level 2) (Version 7) (2 Credits)

Prepare and present basic sandwiches for service.

Unit Standard 13283 (Level 2) (Version 6) (2 Credits)

Prepare and present salads for service.

Unit Standard 13280 (Level 2) (Version 7) (2 Credits)

Prepare fruit and vegetable cuts in a commercial kitchen.

Learning Facilities

Our ākonga learn from professionals and get practical experience in our training kitchens and restaurants in Palmerston North (Ambitions) and Whanganui (Visions).

Domestic Entry Requirements

For year 11 - 13 secondary school learners (NZ Citizens, permanent residents or learners with an applicable visa allowing them to be enrolled in a secondary school).

Applications are to be received from participating schools.

Recommended school subjects include:

  • Home Economics

  • Technology

  • English

Learners must maintain appropriate attendance at both secondary school and Academy to remain enrolled in the Academy Programme.
